Home School in the Woods, Colonial Days Review
Do your kids (and you) love hands on learning? Then this company is for you! I was given an opportunity to review Home School in the Woods and their Colonial Life in the Time Travelers American History series. Home School in the Woods is a hands on learning company that has so many different learning opportunities to choose from! We picked this series because we love that time era so much!
First of all, this product is downloadable so you can print it as you need it and if you accidentally mess up a page, its not a big deal, just re-print. I love how handy that is 🙂 This is all hands on projects though it does have a section you read for each part that explains the history in an interesting conversational manner.
This set covers the whole gamut of Colonial Life in really great detail. It covers these topics: America’s Colonies Begin, The Colonial Home, Clothing, Food, Family Life, School, Faith in the Colonies, Villages & Cities, Health & Medicine, Artisans, Crime & Punishment, Plantations & Slavery, Pleasures & Pastimes, and Holidays! In each of these you’ll read about 3 pages of information, then complete 2-3 projects. These are designed to take between 5-10 weeks to cover. Since I’m doing these with 4 & 7 year olds it takes a little longer and we don’t do all the projects, because some are more advanced.
My boys really thought these were neat and I have to agree! In the first one we learned about how the colonies began, which ones lasted and which ones didn’t. Then they got to do an “archeological dig” which consisted of cutting out certain objects found in digs around Washington’s place and pasting them next to the description. They also learned how the archeologists conduct digs and how they map out dig sites. There were other optional activities that included writing a newspaper for the times (too advanced right now for my boys but really interesting for older kids).
Then we learned about the colonial home and how they built them depending on what area they lived in. They also learned about the barn which was so important to colonists. The project they completed for that was a barn that opens and has a slot which hold squares of paper depicting each thing you’d find on a colonist’s farm. They thought that was cool!
We did several other independent projects to go along with the time era also such as canning produce and baking homemade bread. They also got to experience dutch oven cooking outdoors with their dad which would have been commonplace in that time (especially in the summer, I imagine).
There is so much more to learn about this era and this company has done a wonderful job making projects for it! We will go on to make houses in different designs, and one I am really looking forward to is the Holiday section!
I want to also mention that they have many more series of products including their brand new Ancient Rome pack as s part of their Project Passport World History Studies!
