"St. Bartholomew's Eve" Audio Drama from Heirloom Audio Review

Jenny/ October 16, 2018/ Homeschool Reviews

So, I’ve bragged over and over about Heirloom Audio and when I was given “St. Bartholomew’s Eve”, which is part of the extraordinary adventures of G.A. Henty, to review it certainly didn’t disappoint us!  Again, the sound quality is phenomenal and the story definitely jumps out and grabs you!  I received this series on a 2 cd set that is over 2 hours long.

The Story:

What do you know about St. Bartholomew’s Eve?  I will honestly confess, I knew absolutely nothing.  But this story will take you on the thrilling and very disturbing true story of the massacre of Protestant French Huguenots by the Catholics during the French War on Religion.  I had no idea this happened 🙁  You will follow a young man, 16 year old Philip Fletcher whose father is an English farmer and mother a French Huguenot as he goes to help the Huguenot’s fight for religious freedom.  I’m not going to be a spoiler here and tell the details.  Suffice to say, there is danger, intrigue, romance (tastefully) and redemption.  G. A. Henty is a master storyteller and this is no exception.

Putting it into Practice:

How can you use these audio books in your homeschool (or to supplement your child’s education)?  There are so many ways!  First off, they are wonderful listening to and won’t be boring to you or your children at all. In fact, I had to make Jake turn it off after listening to it twice in a row, (hehe).  They and you will learn so much about religious persecution and the fact that it definitely could happen again if we forget our past.  Freedom is only obtained through sacrifice and generally, bloodshed.

You can use these to springboard a larger study of the event that occurred.  If your children are older (mine are 4 & 7) they can do research and write an essay, short story or give an oral presentation on what they have learned.  They could research modern day religious persecution and perhaps even get involved with helping those that are affected by this like Philip Fletcher did in the story.

They could also research what else was going on in the world at the time of this story.  There are just so many possibilities with audio adventures.  They make car trips shorter and make history come alive!  I know I have learned an incredible amount of history that I had never heard of before from audio adventures!

Take Aways:

If you are interested in teaching your children about history away from the beaten path of names, dates and places I highly recommend you use Heirloom Audio!  They will put actual people into those events and make them something your child will remember a lifetime!  The actors, sound effects, and story line are topnotch!  When you finish the story, you will wonder, “why have I never heard of that before?”

Check Them Out!

Don’t forget to check them out!  They have many other audio adventures and a membership club that is fantastic!  You can either buy the audios as digital downloads or as a 2 cd set.
